Chipmunks are actually a part of the rodent family, although they generally do not carry disease like most other rodents. Chipmunks can be found in trees or running around your yard eating seeds, nuts, and fruits.

Raccoons are well known for their curious and mischievous behavior in your outdoor trash cans. They generally live beneath porches, attics, and chimneys. The skunk is easy to identify because of its black fury coat and white strip along its entire body and tail. Yet, on the other hand, skunks can be very harmful to property and domestic animals. Not to mention their health concern for humans. Like the raccoon, they are known to carry rabies, a disease that causes serious health problems.

Generally, bats come out in the early spring and leave during the winter months to warmer places. Lucky for us, we live in a place that’s warm year round, so you guessed it, they never really leave us here in Puerto Rico! Bats can invade a home through very small openings in and around your home. Homeowners will hear them, as well as see their droppings, but can be difficult to control since they are most active at night. They also raise a health risk to humans because, although rare, they have been known to carry rabies.

Lizards do not infest homes but often come in simply by accident looking for things to eat, like bugs. They don’t bite or cause harmful effects on humans but are considered a pest. Reducing vegetation and limiting outdoor lights can be helpful in protecting your home from these visitors.

There are some birds that have become a public health threat because they carry diseases that can be transmitted to humans. Bird droppings can cause unsanitary conditions for outdoor patios and restaurants, as well as eat away the outsides of homes or buildings.
