What do Snakes look like?
There are various types of snakes around the world. They can range from 10cm to several meters in length. Their colors and stripes vary from brown, red and greenish hues. Here in Puerto Rico, the gardener snake is most popular to bother people in and around their homes.
Behavior & Habits
Snakes eat animals like insects, worms, small rodents, frogs, and birds. Venomous snakes use their large fangs to kill prey, while nonvenomous snakes bite their prey and then wrap themselves tightly around them to eat.
Your New Roommates
Although lots of people are afraid of snakes, they are actually an important part of our ecosystem. Why? Well, because they help control other pests for a variety of animals. The majority of snakes found in Puerto Rico are nonvenomous and therefore have no health risk to humans. At the same time, most people hate snakes and despite their importance for controlling other pests, they want them out!
I bet you didn’t know this:
Some snakes lay eggs and others actually give birth to baby snakes.
